Naturopathy Treatments for Irregular Menstrual Disorder

Irregular Menstrual Disorders

Menstruation normally begins at the age of 11 – 13 years and stops around 45 years. Normally the menstrual cycles are regular – occur once in 28 days (range 21 – 35 days) with the bleeding lasting for 3-5 days.

Some common complaints associated with menstruation are – painful irregular periods and excessive or scanty bleeding. A person may have one or more complaints simultaneously.

Adolescent girls commonly have lower abdominal pain (back and leg pain, occasionally) on the first day of the menstrual period (Spasmodic Dysmenorrheal). There may be nausea, vomiting or loose stools. The exact cause is not known. The long-term benefit is obtained by regular asanas and brisk walking. Relieving constipation helps as a general measure and specifically, period to period. Fruit diet 2-3 days before menstrual periods and fasting on the day of onset of the period’s help.

Menstrual bleeding may also occur at irregular periods. It may be excessive, so as to cause anemia or it may be scanty – such that there is only spotting of blood. Anxiety and depression may be associated with the menstrual period in some cases. Of the numerous causes, hormonal imbalances, over and underweight are easily controllable by Naturopathic and Yogic methods. Other conditions that may occur are onset of menstrual periods at an early age (precocious puberty) not having menstrual periods ever or having stopped at an early age, all of which require further medical assessment.

Asanas and diet regulation are essential. Massage to the abdomen, back, and legs, avoiding stimulants like tea, coffee, alcohol also help. Adequate sleep, rest and relaxation help to combat anxiety and depression. See chart for further line of treatment
